The 30,000 mile New 97 !

GoytWe love a testimonial here at Stromberg. And this is right up there. Stromberg customer Mark Biggin drives his Model AV8 – a lot. In his own words: “I stuck the new 97 on straight from the box then headed off to Pilzen in the Czech Republic (800 miles from his home in the UK) for the Liberation Festival back in 2010. It’s done nigh on 30,000 miles since and I’ve not had to touch it (occasionally adjust the idle speed). Been through two engines, two gearboxes, rear axle overhauls and a new roof mind you!

New Chevy 3×2 fuel line from Stromberg

DSC_0340We’ve been promising a summer packed with new products. So let’s get it kicked off with our new, ready-to-fit, Chevy 3×2 fuel line for small block engines.

Set at 5-1/2in carb spacing to fit Offenhauser and Edelbrock SBC 3×2 intakes, the new Big Bore fuel line (Part No. 9146-BIG) uses the classic 3-into-1 format with CNC-bent 5/16in OD 304 stainless steel lines and leak-free, ‘invisible’ furnace brazed joints. The round-bar fuel block sits down close to the manifold, matching the four degree Chevy intake angle to align visually with the valve covers. And for maximum versatility, it has 1/4NPT threads at both ends with machined 11/16in AF flats so that fittings can be tightened safely without damaging the line. The brass compression fittings (included) to attach the line into the three 97s retain the look and feel of the traditional ‘Ford Nut’ fitting.

Traditionally, all Stromberg 97s use 1/4in line, but for a Chevy tri-power, the 5/16in line looks far more appropriate. The regular 97 fuel inlet won’t accept a 5/16in line, though, so we’ve developed a new Stromberg S-jet inlet valve (part number 9564K-BIG) with the correct 5/16in seat, which must be used with this Big Bore fuel line. The 9564K S-jet, (standard on regular Stromberg 97s) must not be used with 5/16in line. Our forthcoming high cfm BIG 97 carburetor will come with the BIG S-jet as standard.

More Painted Stromberg 97s

While our Black & Chrome 97s have been very popular this year, we’ve had more orders for painted Stromberg 97s in other colours recently. Here are a few examples, each one an awesome job by our friends at The Paintbox. The white tripower is destined for a 50’s style Model A, also painted white. The Ford maroon 3×2 is going onto a blown flathead and the Chevy Orange set are going in a shop truck…sadly not ours.

Connecting a throttle cable kit to a Stromberg TwoStep linkage

Our 9136K Cable Throttle Bracket is compatible with pretty much all Stromberg 97-based intake manifolds, though some Ford Flathead intakes need a remote fuel pump to work with cable throttle. It’s easy to install, of course, especially if you download our ‘How To: Install 9136K Cable Throttle Bracket’ instructions from the Stromberg Tech Center. Just remember to stick it under the rear carburetor on your intake. And note that on a 3×2 direct linkage, the bracket lifts the rear carburetor a little, so the front two carbs may need packing with extra gaskets (see our kit 69447K) for perfect linkage alignment. On a 2×2 direct or 3×2 progressive linkage, this is not a problem.

Aftermarket throttle cable kits should come with a fitting on the carburetor end of the cable which clips into a small threaded ball. To attach that ball to your Stromberg linkage, simply remove it from the cable end fitting. Remove the small black set-screw from one of the Stromberg linkage swivels. Screw the threaded ball into the swivel (clamping the linkage rod as with the set screw) and clip your throttle cable end back onto it. If you have a 2×2 linkage, fix the cable to the front carburetor. On a 3×2 system, fix it to the center carb, either into the swivel or (on the longer progressive lever) through the lower adjustment hole. Always check that the threaded ball clamps the linkage rod tight.Linkage 2

WARNING! Always double check that you have connected all of the linkages – throttle, choke, accelerator pump – and fuel lines correctly. Manually (and from inside the car), operate the throttle lever and choke mechanism to ensure free movement. Any sticking, binding, or ‘over-center’ movement in the linkage could result in uncontrolled engine speed, property damage, serious personal injury, or death. Always use a throttle return spring.

Nickel Stromberg 97

DSC_9889We had a special order recently for a pair of new Stromberg 97s in nickel plate. So we sent some off to our usual plater and here they are. We kept the usual polished stainless steel parts like the kicker linkage and choke parts, but the main body castings are nickel Stromberg 97, as are all the small (normally) brass plugs, S-jet, needle valves, etc.  They do have a slightly different, yellow cast compared with our usual chrome 97s, and you do see slight coloration marks over the castings that polish out once you get at it. We had heard that nickel plate is not to easy to keep looking good, but the plater said that actually, if you start with good zinc castings (like ours), they do keep their lustre. Anyway, if you fancy a set for yourself, please email us or ask your dealer.
